ALA seeks federal support for public libraries

As government agencies turn to the Web for delivering their services, public librarians are facing increasing demands. A participant at one of our forums last month commented that librarians are becoming more like social workers, helping clients learn how to use a computer mouse, how to conduct a Google search, or how to find a Web site.

Acknowledging that library usage is increasing at the same time library finances are being squeezed, the American Library Association is seeking a $100 million stimulus package to support library services such as expanded service hours, small business development, and job search assistance.
